Music, Dance, Theater…Oh My!

The variety and breadth of performing arts experiences in Fergus Falls is astounding. Now that it’s spring, the songbirds have returned and remind us how much we missed their music during the winter. Music feeds the soul so it’s no wonder a healthy dose of live music is not just fun, but good for us. There’s even a fairly new vocation, music therapy, which uses music to promote wellness, manage stress, alleviate pain, express feelings, enhance memory, improve communication and promote physical rehabilitation! Now there’s a prescription worth picking up. To be sure you get a regular dose of music Fergus Falls has several live music opportunities. Many of the local night-clubs have music (local yokels and on-the-road favorites). The Z103 Bar & Grill, Union Pizza and Brewing Co. both offer a healthy serving of tasty treats (and brews) to go with live music. Or you can try out your own performance in the supportive environment of Open Mic Night at The Spot. A Center for the Arts frequently hosts touring musicians, and this month presents the talented members of our own community during Razzle Dazzle Revue, now in its 10th (and final) year. It will inspire you to laugh and relax as you reap the benefits of the musician’s hard work. Throughout the summer enjoy live Concerts in Roosevelt Park (complete with food trucks and followed by a free movie in the park).

Dancing, twirling, and leaping about. Whether it is the dancers touring with Caravanserai or our own darling children during a spring recital, dance does more than just entertain. It can take us to a destination far away through costume, music and motion. The culture and history represented through dance are educational and entertaining. A Center for the Arts brings dance to the stage frequently throughout the year and this spring is no exception. Hip-hoppers and ‘Breakers are featured in April’s performance by “The Reminders, MaMa2, and DJ Man-O-Wax.” With their funky, up-beat and contemporary moves and sound, patrons will be toe-tapping and head-nodding throughout the performance. When these artists come to Fergus Falls they don’t just dance and dash, they spend a few days giving workshops to students of all ages and share at civic club meetings. It’s a great way to pay it forward and inspire people of all ages.

Now in its 34th year, the Fergus Falls School of Dance is where it all begins for young dancers.  As early as four-years-old classes teach the fundamentals and by the time dancers are graduating from high school they may have added tap, jazz, modern, hip-hop, pointe and of course, ballet to their repertoire. The two annual performances are the Spring Show and December’s Dance and Dessert. The Edge dance studio also has a strong following in Fergus Falls. These two dance studios and the Center for the Arts are all within a two block area of downtown Fergus Falls. Be sure to waltz on down next time you’re in Fergus Falls.

Theater (or is it theatre?) comes in all shapes and sizes. This season will be a real treat as Fergus Falls is home to many talented thespians. Plan to attend either (or both) of the summer live theater events there. The children’s theater is performing “Beauty and the Beast, Jr.” in June and the adults will revive the favorite “Fiddler on the Roof” in July. If you like romantic comedy enjoy dinner theater at the Bigwood Event Center in May as they bring you "Life's Crazy Journey" featuring The Funtastics Theater Troupe. The Funtastics perform throughout the summer at Elmer’s Barbeque.

(Props to the Springboard for the Arts for their support of local arts – especially in Greater Minnesota!)

Mix it up, bring the kids (or the parents) and take in all that Fergus Falls offers in live entertainment. Visit our calendar of events and venue links for specifics.
