From Contraband to King: The Life of Prince Albert Honeycutt
Artist: Charvis Harrell
Acclaimed painter Charvis Harrell presents his newest body of work celebrating the extraordinary life of Prince Albert Honeycutt—a man who escaped slavery as a child, made his way to Minnesota, and became the state’s first Black professional baseball player in 1873. Honeycutt’s legacy as a barbershop owner and civic leader in Fergus Falls embodies themes of resilience, hard work, and loyalty that continue to resonate today.
Originally from Macon, Georgia and now residing in rural Minnesota, Harrell is known for illuminating overlooked aspects of Black history through his evocative paintings. His work invites viewers to challenge their perceptions and deepen their understanding of our shared past.
A Death In 3 Parts – Part One: Disposition (2025)
Artist: Kate Swenson
In this first installment of her three-part series, emerging sculptor Kate Swenson presents thought-provoking paper mâché works that explore our relationship with death and disposition. Drawing from her background as a funeral director, hospice worker, and tissue recovery specialist, Swenson transforms discarded materials into contemplative sculptures that question cultural practices around death.
Her work invites us to consider challenging questions: Do we all end up in the same place? How do cultural beliefs shape our understanding of death? Where does control, violence, or fetishization enter our language and practices around disposition?
Meet the Artists
Both Charvis Harrell and Kate Swenson will be present at the reception to share about their work and creative processes. Light refreshments will be provided.
Free and open to the public. No RSVP required.
