Welcome back to the Visit Fergus Falls Blog! Today, we're venturing downtown Fergus Falls to explore a local institution – Victor Lundeen's. For over a century, this store has been a cornerstone of the community, and we were lucky enough to chat with Paul, who keeps the Lundeen legacy alive.

Paul, thanks for taking the time to chat with us! Let's jump right in.

Victor Lundeen's – that's quite the history! Can you tell us a bit about how it all began?

Paul:

Absolutely! My grandfather actually started the store back in 1914, when he was just 16 years old. Can you imagine that kind of entrepreneurial spirit? Originally, it was on Washington Avenue, but shortly after the cyclone in 1919, they built the building we are standing in today. It has been a part of the downtown landscape ever since.

Wow, that's incredible! Running a business through generations has its challenges, I am sure. What's been the biggest hurdle you've faced?

Paul: Without a doubt, it's the rise of online retail giants like Amazon. So many bookstores haven't been able to weather that storm. You just don't see the big chains like Barns and Noble around much anymore.

Visit Fergus Falls: So how has Victor Lundeen's managed to thrive despite that challenge?

Paul: We focus on offering something you cannot get online – that personal touch, curated selections, and a commitment to the community. We stock a great selection of children's books and local interest titles. People come here knowing they will find something special, something they will not get at the big online stores.

Paul: Absolutely! We take pride in getting to know our customers and fulfilling their needs. We offer a wide variety – books, office supplies, gift cards and printing services – a little bit of everything. It's a one-stop shop for folks who appreciate quality and personalized service.

Paul: Sure thing! We carry a surprising amount of local products. From greeting cards by the Fergus Falls local artist Charles Beck to books by regional authors, there's always something new to discover with a local connection. And history buffs get a kick out of exploring the original bank vaults that are now part of our gift shop!

Visit Fergus Falls: That's so neat! It sounds like Victor Lundeen's is more than just a store – it's an experience.

Paul: We're happy to offer VIP Pass holders a special 15% discount on their purchases. It's a great way to show our appreciation for your support of local businesses.
